The Americas Research Division analyses domestic, economic and foreign policy developments in the United States and Latin America as well as the relations between Germany/Europe and the countries of the Americas.

  • Asia

The Asia Division concentrates on the interrelationship between domestic transformation processes, foreign and security policy in southern and Pacific Asia, and their global ramifications.

  • Eastern Europe, Eurasia

The Eastern Europe and Eurasia Division explores political structures, social processes and developments in foreign, security and military policy in the post-Soviet states of Eastern Europe and Eurasia, in particular Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

  • EU/Europe

The research division EU/Europe analyses the core challenges facing the European Union and Europe. Research focuses on policy areas, processes and concerns that shape the internal and external action of the European Union and its member states.

  • Global Issues

The Global Issues Division examines the diverse thematic fields of global governance and the underlying conflict lines and actor constellations at the governmental, intergovernmental, and non-state level; the common point of reference are the preconditions, potentials and limits of rule-based and efficient global cooperation.

  • International Security

The International Security Division examines a wide range of security issues ranging from European and transatlantic security relations to global issues such as the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and arms control.

  • Turkey/CATS

The Centre for Applied Turkey Studies (CATS) is dedicated to the study of Turkish domestic and foreign policy, understanding Turkey as an actor with pronounced regional – and occasionally global – ambitions.
