Migration movements affect countries in very different ways. Their historical experience of migration, their scope and structure of immigration and emigration, and their associated political challenges often differ fundamentally. Accordingly, the status and trends in national migration and asylum policies are difficult to compare. Nevertheless, knowledge of national migration and refugee policies is indispensable for understanding the behaviour of states in regional and international cooperation.
