Asia

The Asia Division concentrates on the interrelationship between domestic transformation processes, foreign and security policy in southern and Pacific Asia, and their global ramifications.

Back

The Asia Research Division examines the linkages between internal transformation processes and the foreign and security policies of Asian countries and explores the implications of these developments at the global level.

Our research focuses on three key areas:

  • Germany’s bilateral relations with Asian countries:
We analyze dynamics of cooperation and conflict in Germany’s relations with key states across the region.
  • Dealing with China under Xi Jinping:
We explore China’s growing structural and normative power ambitions and their impact on international politics. We also assess the implications of “Global China” for Germany’s bilateral cooperation and for collaboration in and with third countries.
  • Order in the Indo-Pacific:
We study shifts in the regional order of the Indo-Pacific and examine how key actors envision and shape the region’s future order.
