The division's work is focused on social and political transformation, domestic and regional conflicts, as well as questions relating to external and security policies in Africa and the Middle East.

In particular, its work concentrates on:

  • societal and political change and its implications for regional stability
  • domestic and regional conflicts
  • regional cooperation, competition and shifts in regional balances of power
  • socio-political polarization in the Near / Middle East, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region
  • power-sharing arrangements as instruments of conflict management (for instance in Iraq, Sudan, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, the DR Congo, etc.)
  • Jihadism as a transnational phenomenon and its social, political and security implications
  • German and European policies towards the sub-regions
