Berlin, 8 January 2020. Former SWP Director Volker Perthes has been appointed UN Special Representative for Sudan and head of the new United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). Perthes, who headed SWP from 2005 until 2020, will serve as an Under-Secretary-General. UNITAMS will support Sudan’s political transformation, the ongoing peace process and peacekeeping after decades of dictatorship and civil war. Its remit also includes assistance with economic reconstruction and mobilising international aid.

Stefan Mair, who succeeded Perthes as SWP Director in October 2020, said he was delighted that his predecessor had been chosen for such an important international role: “We congratulate Volker Perthes on his appointment as UN Special Representative and Under-Secretary-General. This decision is also an accolade for SWP, and concrete recognition of our practical competence in all aspects of international politics.”
