Statement by European Research Institute Directors

On Monday, 22 March 2021, the Chinese Foreign Ministry imposed sanctions on ten individuals and four institutions in Europe in retaliation at EU sanctions.

The March 21st EU Sanctions were aimed at Chinese government officials accused of being involved in human rights abuses in Xinjiang. However, the Chinese sanctions in response covered not just European officials and political figures, but academics and academic and policy institutions which have a central role in undertaking research in Europe on China. These include researchers from Sweden and Germany, and the largest European China-focused think tank, the Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS).

Research Network Sustainable Global Supply Chains

International research network investigates global supply chains: How do we create sustainable value?

Berlin, 1 March 2021. Against the backdrop of COVID-19, the debate about a Due Diligence Act and the persisting inequality in the global economy, a new network is stepping up research into the sustainability of global value chains. Supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Research Network Sustainable Global Supply Chains will see leading researchers pool their findings, initiate new research projects and develop recommendations for practitioners. The network will be headed by four German research institutions: the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) (which also hosts the network office), the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW).

Think Tank Index: SWP Abstained from Evaluation

Berlin, 02.02.2021. As in previous years, SWP did not participate in preparing the Global Go To Think Tank Index. James G. McGann, Director of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania, regularly invites think tank “peers” to evaluate counterparts. SWP has massive reservations concerning the procedures and methodology used, and sees no reason to respond. We are aware that this may lead to a less favourable “ranking”.

Volker Perthes Appointed UN Special Representative for Sudan and Head of UNITAMS

Berlin, 8 January 2020. Former SWP Director Volker Perthes has been appointed UN Special Representative for Sudan and head of the new United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). Perthes, who headed SWP from 2005 until 2020, will serve as an Under-Secretary-General. UNITAMS will support Sudan’s political transformation, the ongoing peace process and peacekeeping after decades of dictatorship and civil war. Its remit also includes assistance with economic reconstruction and mobilising international aid.

Stefan Mair New Head of SWP

Berlin, 1 October 2020. Dr. Stefan Mair (57) takes over as the new Chair of the Board of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) on 1 October. In that capacity he will also be the new Director of the SWP research institute. Mr. Mair succeeds Prof. Dr. Volker Perthes (62), who headed the organisation for fifteen years (2005–2020). Mr. Perthes will continue to serve as Senior Advisor to the Executive Board.

Stefan Mair New Head of SWP

Berlin, 16 January 2020. Dr. Stefan Mair (56) will be the new Chair of the Board of Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP). In that capacity he also becomes the Director of the SWP research institute. The SWP Council finalised the appointment at its meeting on 15 January 2020. Mair will assume the position on 1 October 2020, taking over from Prof. Dr. Volker Perthes (61).

New Centre for Applied Turkey Studies in Berlin

Berlin, 18 September 2019. The new Centre for Applied Turkey Studies (CATS) in Berlin was inaugurated yesterday. It operates as part of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), and is funded by Stiftung Mercator and the German Federal Foreign Office.
