New Power New Responsibility
In the context of the global financial and debt crisis, Germany has become the object of heightened expectations. Many neighbors and partners look to Berlin for more leadership and action in questions of European and international affairs. The new government in Berlin will have to deal with Germany’s new power and increasing expectations of German leadership responsibly.
In the fall of 2012, the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP - German Institute for International and Security Affairs) assembled 51 experts on foreign and security policy from the Bundestag, administration, science, industry, foundations, think tanks, media and non-governmental organizations. They discussed key future challenges for German foreign and security policy in a series of conferences and workshops through mid-2013; the project was funded by the Policy Planning staff of the German Foreign Ministry.
