Youth Bulge - Chance or Risk for Security? (compl.)

The steadily growing labour force created by a disproportionately large young population, or youth bulge, offers potential for growth and prosperity. But under certain political and socio-economic conditions such a situation can foster instability and violence. Today, youth bulges are found principally in developing countries and emerging economies.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, this research project brings together questions of security and development policy. What are the demographic trends in different regions? Under what conditions does a youth bulge pose a security risk – and when is it a growth factor for developing countries? What conclusions can be drawn for German and international development cooperation?
